Flutes: 2 Up-cut endmills direct woodchips up and away from the milling area leaving an unobstructed path for the endmill. Bit breakage is less likely. Up cut end mills are the best choice for most standard millling applications. The up cut direction can leave behind a minimally rough top surface edge. Pros: Quick and efficient milling, chip removal. Can cause minimal top surface edge roughness or tear-away. (Choose a down cut spiral bit for projects that require smooth top surface edges.) For use in CNC milling and carving machines.

This bit fits into pretty much any router, and does a nice job of slicing an 1/8" path through wood, aluminum, plastic, vinyl, laminates, etc.

This bit is a down-cut bit; which means it pushes the cut-away chips into the workpiece. The main benifit of this type of cutter is that it is much less likely to chip a workpiece that has a thin and/or fragile face, such as plywood or lamitated surfaces. However, it only has two flutes; so it cuts quickly and easily -- but not as cleanly or smoothly as finer ones.

This two-flute, down-cut configuration will cause less chipping than a similar up-cut bit; but may leave a rougher looking groove than a finer one.

If you need a clean cut; your best bet is to cut in multiple passes, with the final one being very shallow.
